Broken Fire Alarm
What do I do now?

Don’t give up yet.

As frustrating as it may seem, there are very few occurrences when an entire fire alarm is broken. Normally systems can have various components that malfunction, but it is very rare that all the system components would stop working.

What some might consider a broken fire alarm system would possibly just involve replacement of a few devices, or worst case scenario a broken fire alarm control panel.  Provided your system is not a proprietary system (one that only certain companies have access to replacement parts).  You can still have your system repaired normally for a fairly reasonable cost.  Sometimes depending on the condition that led to the situation you would call “broken fire alarm system” you may even find that the repairs are covered under property insurance policies.

Here are some instances that may lead to a

Broken Fire Alarm:

  1. Lightning!!!---If you have had a storm pass through recently or just before your fire alarm began giving you trouble, then there is a good possibility that your system may have incurred static electricity which has a tendency to create havoc on fire alarm systems and components.  Some of the newer microprocessor based systems will come back online with what we call a cold start.  If your building took a direct hit from lightning, then you should have more problems than just a broken fire alarm system.
  2. Water Damage!!!---Yep if you had a water leak in your facility this can lead to some broken fire alarm components.  They just simply will not work under water. Special Note:  We have found that in kitchen areas of buildings, workers have a tendency to spray water on the walls to clean them.  You have to make sure they know to avoid spraying the fire alarm devices as it can lead to corrosion and or failure.  The good news is that most roof leaks are covered under insurance policies and with a little paperwork you can have broken fire alarm equipment repaired or replaced at little or no cost when water damage is the culprit.
  3. Accidents, Abuse, or Misuse---Unfortunatly these normally aren’t covered by insurance and can lead to a broken fire alarm condition. We have seen everything from lift trucks running into various fire alarm equipment, to basketballs or volleyballs knocking devices off gymnasium walls.  Sometimes these kinds of incidents could have been prevented had appropriate measures been taken at the time of installation.  There are devices to protect fire alarm equipment in areas where they could be accidentally damaged, or broken.  When it comes to vandalism or mischievous behavior, unless you can catch the culprit/s you just end up stuck with the repairs.
